Jon spent the weekend painting lots and lots of trim. It's amazing what a difference that makes! So all the trim is done now except the baseboards in the mudroom. Jon & Andy put down the tile yesterday and I love it! It's a porcelain tile that looks like slate. It's silly, but the box called it something like "HD porcelain". I was joking with Jon that we're so fancy even our tile is hi-definition. The reason we went with a porcelain tile versus natural stone slate: porcelain is water & stain resistant, harder to crack, won't scratch. Since this room is going to get high traffic and eventually be our entry for everyday use, we wanted something very resilient. It brings much needed color to our otherwise blank slate.
don't you just love the cased openings? i love the trim in this house.
nice, clean lines and so simple
(though Jon will tell you making new ones was a pain in the butt)
a view from the mudroom looking down the stairs
this little space gets so much light!
someone asked me for a view of how the stairs lay out, so here you go!
the stair treads will be oak, the landings are going to be the same slate tile
i can't believe my husband built these stairs.
it was a lot of math and a lot of cursing.
a view of the mudroom/kitchen opening from the stairs
we nearly didn't put that tiny window in, i'm so glad we did
it's one of my favorite features of this room (mostly because it cranks open)
Happy Wednesday!

Looks awesome. I love, love the look of the kitchen so much!
So beautiful!! Good job, Jon!!
Lookin' good!! I'm in love with your fridge.
Leslie - remember when you came by after we had first moved in and the kitchen was completely gutted? Hard to believe that was only 4 months, ago, huh? ha ha.
Liz- we LOVE the fridge. I really wanted a freezer on bottom so my fresh produce wouldn't be hard to see. It's definitely helped in making sure we eat what we purchase!
Janet - my favorite part about opening this space (well, besides the obvious functional aspect) is that all of the sudden the paint color in the kitchen appears the way it was supposed to. For months it has looked more blue than gray and then we took down the tarp - opened the space and viola! thundercloud gray as it appeared on the huge swatches. :)
I was thinking that it looked more gray than before. I thought you had painted your kitchen blue. ;)
Everything looks amazing. I'm impressed with his ability to work so well and so quickly, and with your ability to live with it in the process!!
@Katie - yeah we got a lot of compliments on our "blue walls"...which is nice but we were really hoping for a smoky gray. I'm relieved because we bought enough of that gray paint to also do the living room & family room. :) phew!
As for living through renovations, it really hasn't been too bad. We don't have kids to worry about and really once I got an indoor shower and a stove, I was a happy camper. All the dusting is just a minor inconvenience. :)
Looks awesome!
Love it! I can't imagine trying to build our own stairs. Yikes! Math! Gag! Jon deserves a trophy or at least a certificate of awesomeness.
Very nice guys, it looks so great. You guys are so good at doing these sorts of things, proud of you....uh, "proud as a peacock" haha
love it!
It looks so pretty! The tile, paint colors, trim, cabinets, light from the windows - everything just has a peaceful and inviting look. Thanks for the photos!
Looks great! Major props to Jon!
I am in awe. it looks SO good. Not sure if it was me, but I asked for a view of the stairs and they look GREAT! Good Job Jon!
